I hear of this around my part of the woods too. I might be able to add one thing.
In the spring when 3-D is starting up, you have shooters that have shot 20 yards all winter long, then bam your are on the 3-D course shooting everything from 5-50 yards. That is a pretty big change. The archer starts working on sighting in for those longer shots and goes through a "re-adjustment period". All the sudden that 20 yard distance has a different feel than it did during the winter. Not to mention that an archer has to estimate his or her yardage now, opposed to shooting a given 20 yard 5-spot. I find that a lot of shooters when things are not going just right, they seem to start putting the allen screws to the sight fixture. Don't know if this was the road you where headin down, but it is what popped in my head.
