Art Helin of Dodgeville, Wisconsin, began hunting over 40 years ago under the guidance of his father and grandmother. What started as small game and deer hunting in his home state grew to an obsession to hunt nearly every big game and turkey species across North America. Although he enjoys any type of hunting, he is mad about whitetails and turkeys!
Art's hunting success and passion for teaching others has led to his pro/field staffer positions for many outdoor manufacturers. He promotes these companies and the great outdoors by working trade shows, attending retail store special events, conducting seminars, and writing stories for outdoor media. Art’s expertise has been highlighted in articles for magazines including, but not limited to, Buckmasters, American Hunter, Petersen’s Bowhunting, and Realtree.com, and podcosts with Whitetail Rendezvous and Interviews with the Hunting Masters. As a professional photographer, Art specializes in nature and wildlife, with photographs featured in Bear Hunting and Bowhunting World magazines and multiple digital and social media business websites. Art and his wife, Michelle, are experienced in videography, having filmed for Archer's Choice Media Productions and the Double Bull Archery video series, and launched their own show, Own the Season, in 2019.
When speaking with people, Art draws upon his own experience, successes and failures, and the hundreds of days per year in the field hunting, guiding, and scouting. To assist him in scouting, he takes advantage of the tools and technology available including aerial and topographical maps and trail cameras. He has planted food plots for years, which started out small and often failing, but are now getting bigger and better year after year! Art practices woodland management, has completed timber stand improvement and pond projects on his 40-acres, and is eager to share what he has learned with others.
Art is busy promoting archery and hunting in his community when he's not afield. He is active in the local National Wild Turkey Federation chapter, which hosts a highly successful, award-winning Learn to Turkey Hunt event. Since it began in 2003, the event has grown from nine to over thirty new hunters, primarily women and youth. Participants have also included children with chronic or terminal illnesses from the United Special Sportsmen's Foundation. In addition to this annual hunt, Art is also involved in local youth deer hunts, and hunts with veterans and individuals with special needs.
Art lives in rural southwestern Wisconsin with his wife, Michelle, and daughters, Alana and Elizabeth. While Art loves hunting, what he has really come to enjoy, even more, is hunting with family and friends. One of his proudest moments came when Alana shot her first longbeard turkey, now many years ago. When he is not in the woods or working as a real estate appraiser, Art enjoys fishing, watching football and UFC, and driving his motorcycle and ’67 Mustang.
