Whether you love the early season or the cold bitter end, you need gear to keep you cozy. Here are the latest duds in Realtree camo straight from the Archery Trade Show floor
It’s not out of the question for there to be a 100-degree temperature difference between the first day of bow season and the last one. If you’re as obsessed with all of this as we are, then you know your clothing and footwear are as important to success as your bow and arrows. This is the stuff that keeps you comfortable during those long sits, no matter the weather. Ultimately, just being out there is what matters most when it comes to filling your tags. There is a great lineup of new stuff, from lightweight early season wear to heavy late-season stuff, at the 2020 ATA Show. Here’s what we’ve found so far … but be sure to keep checking for updates.
Covered in our all-new Excape pattern and designed with Carbon Alloy technology for maximum scent adsorption, the new BE:1 Fortress Park from ScentLok is an excellent choice for late-season whitetail hunters. The Fortress Parka is windproof, waterproof, well-articulated, and thermal mapped to keep you warm and out hunting when the weather really turns and the bucks start moving.
Selecting good rain gear for bowhunting is kind of complicated. On the one hand, you need it to keep you, well, dry. On the other, it’d best if it didn’t sound like crumpling wax paper while drawing your bow. The new Full Season Elements line from ScentLok promises to be the brand’s most advanced late-season outerwear yet. It features a soft and quiet outer fabric treated with Precip-X, a coating that repels water, mud, blood and other liquids. The jacket and pants have bonded seams, adjustable cuffs, and waterfproof zippers, as well as a micro-fleece lining for warmth and comfort.
Made in the USA, the new Rocky Stalkers are built for the elk mountains, the whitetail woods, or about any environment you might find yourself sneaking through. They are lightweight and comfortable, thanks to the Air-Port fusion footbed. To keep your feet warm, they are built with 800g of 3M Thinsulate Ultra insulation. To ensure safe travels across unsafe terrain, these boots boast a durable polyurethane outsole and grippy-everywhere-you-hike lug pattern.
The new Hale boots from Muck are designed for serious female hunters. These 100-percent waterproof boots are built for comfort and use in the worst elements, with their breathable mesh lining and 5mm neoprene bootie. They also feature little details that matter a lot like the Pull-On Tab, which eliminates the beginning-of-the-day wrestling match that comes with wearing most knee boots.
Comfort on stand during cold spells is the key to sitting longer and coming out of the woods heavy. The Classic Elite Body Insulator Suit from Arctic Shield allows you to do just that, no matter how much the mercury tanks. This one-piece, full-body suit is waterproof, windproof and designed with elastic inner shoulder straps that you wear like a backpack to keep the suit where it needs to be until it’s time to shoot.
If you’re in the hunt for duds that will keep you dry and warm but won’t break the bank, then you should check out the Townsend Ridge Techshell Jacket and Pant from Habit Outdoors. These mid-weight offerings are ideal during most of turkey and deer season, and to beat the noses of the latter, are designed with Scent-Factor Scent Inhibitor Technology, which works to inhibit the growth of odor causing bacteria.
If you’re in the market for well-built duds that don’t come with price tag sticker shock, Blocker Outdoors is a great place to start. Their Shield Series Angatec LS Tee is a lightweight, early season top that is covered in our new Excape pattern, which is ideal for everything from eastern whitetails to open-country mule deer. The entire Shield Series lineup contains shirts, pants, jackets and accessories, and easily represents one of the best values you’ll find in new camo this year.
If you take a youngster hunting and it gets too cold, it’s game over. For keeping kids warm, it’s tough to beat Arctic Shield's Youth Classic Elite Parka, which is designed with Retain heat-retention technology to ensure that the elements will be kept at bay for as long as possible. This wind and waterproof garment is perfect for pairing up with the Youth Classic Elite Bib for an entire system that will keep young hunters in the game no matter what Mother Nature throws their way.
One of two new lines of outerwear introduced by ScentLok for female hunters, the Forefront jacket and pant are perfect for those cool, mid-season sits when big bucks are cruising for does. The Forefront series sports a micro tricot and water-resistant outer shell, 180-gram fleece inner lining, safety harness opening on the jacket, five pockets on the pants, articulated knees and elbows for mobility, and all the other features serious bowhunters demand from high-end gear.
This new heavyweight line of gear is designed for sitting long hours in a cold, late-season treestand. It’s wind and waterproof with a tricot outer shell, and the upper is actually a jacket-and-vest combo. You can wear it as just the vest (which has a comfy Berber fleece lining), just the jacket, or combine them both for those really bitter days. The jacket has an adjustable hood with a bonded bill for extra rain protection. The pants feature leg zippers for easily slipping on and off over boots.
An extra layer that won’t impede the drawing of your bow is a must, which makes the SherpaShell Vest a no-brainer for early- to mid-season hunts. Not only is it wind and waterproof, but it’s also Sherpa Lined for extra warmth. To ensure your hands are kept warm and your gear kept close, this vest also offers zippered chest and hand pockets. Good luck finding another vest of this quality for this price.
A great whitetail jacket will offer two things beyond comfort: Concealment from deer eyes and noses. This why the Pursuit Synthetic Down Full Zip jacket from Non-Typical is covered in Realtree EDGE and built with the Agion Active XL scent control technology. It also employs 140g of synthetic down insulation, features lower slash hand pockets, and is offered in sizes ranging from SM to 3XL.
It’s pretty tough to beat LaCrosse Footwear when it comes to comfortable, hike-all-day knee-highs. With the release of their Alpha Agility 1200G boots, it just got tougher. These 17-inch tall waterproof boots are built with enough Thinsulate Ultra insulation to keep your feet warm even when the temperatures should demand a set of winter boots, but they're lightweight and feature a removable EVA footbed for added comfort.
This boot is pretty impressive, and it won “Best in Show” for “Breakthrough Innovation” because of it. It has an anti-fatigue, energy-return system that absorbs shock. Its NASA-inspired SOLARCORE aerogel lining on the toe cap and boot bottom retains 50% more heat. It’s constructed from scent-reducing, waterproof rubber and comes with an anti-microbial wicking liner. Have meaty calves? It comes with an adjustable gusset and comes with a composite shank. These 800-gram boots fit and feel great.
The new Axis Series suit from Element Outdoors offers a lot of goodness. It sports two-way stretch material and Sherpa-lined fleece that’s perfect for mid-season hunts. It’s water- and stain-resistant, offers odor control and is super breathable. It also boasts the YKK AquaGuard Zippers, six pockets and a three-piece detachable hood. Don’t like a baggy waistline? It comes with a string tensioner. The best part? It’s extremely quiet to hunt in, and it even won “Best in Show” in the “Breakthrough Innovations” category at ATA.
The Ella 2.0 has a camo-brushed tricot outer layer that’s laminated to a plush inner layer. It’s a very warm, yet breathable three-layer jacket. It has a DWR treatment to help shed water. Heavy-duty zippers increase durability and adjustable cuffs and removeable hood maximizes comfort.
The pants are crafted in the same manner and offer abrasion-resistant, 600D darted and shaped knee panels. It also has adjustable snap inseams from 32.5 to 28.5 inches. It has a back pocket with plastic snap closure, a thigh cell phone pocket, and a built-in adjustable, webbing belt.
This boot offers the addition of higher insulation levels, plus an all-leather, camo-dyed material. It also boasts the BOA closure system, so no more tying those shoestrings. In the back, it has an easy on/off heel kick. This model is even lighter than its predecessor yet delivers better traction on rough terrain and increases durability and outstanding all-day comfort. Finally, it comes with the EVA footbed with a memory foam top layer, and the VaprTrek is completely waterproof.
These rubber boots are the lightest ones in the brand’s history, and they’re among the lightest on the market today. These are made to fit comfortably. Hunters can choose options with a snug, athletic fit or a traditional, roomier full fit. Men, women and young adults can select from unisex whole sizes from 4 to 15. TempSense technology helps regulate the temperature within the boot to maintain constant foot comfort. Its antimicrobial scent control helps reduce odors within the boot. A polyurethane footbed and lightweight RPM midsole provide long-lasting, all-day underfoot comfort, and a convenient heel kick aids in boot removal.
