Welcome to the first episode of The 15-Yard Files. The focus of this show, as the name suggests, is all about getting close to big game animals, from bull elk to whitetails to gobbling turkeys, and closing the deal.
Cally Morris, owner of Hazel Creek Taxidermy, has long specialized in obtaining over-the-shoulder hunting footage at extremely close range. He says, "A guy plans all year for the chance at a big buck. He saves two month's pay for the elk hunt of a lifetime. But so often, he ruins his own chances once that animal is inside of 40 yards. When he's at 15, there can be no mistakes. That's tough when the adrenaline is running full-steam. A big part of being an effective hunter is knowing how and when to seal the deal when that animal is within spitting distance. And that's what we're trying to teach on the 15-Yard Files."
In this episode, Cally's wife, Annetta, squares off with a big bull elk at Vermejo Ranch in Colorado. With the bull screaming at a mere 10 yards, Annetta gets stuck at full draw with no shot for a full 10 minutes. You don't want to miss what happens. The 15-Yard Tips:
A bull elk coming to the call is enough to rattle any bowhunter. Knowing exactly when to draw your bow is critical.
If you're stuck at full draw, don't panic, and don't take a bad shot.
Set up a full 50 yards from the caller. This will keep the elk's focus off you.
