The Grade: B

People weren't happy when Wisconsin received a B the first go around. I know, it's the top producer of Booners in the land. Doesn't matter. Wisconsin has again earned a B.

So why the downgrade? Chronic Wasting Disease. CWD continues to spread and people don't seem to be taking it seriously. Pressure from the hunting community as well as recommendations from the state's "deer czars" have led to less regulations against the disease.

The state has nearly 6 million acres of public land with a robust commercial forest program that allows public hunting access to private lands enrolled in that program. Because of that, Wisconsin is a terrific DIY state. Not only that but also the non-resident tags are affordable. It's hard to beat that price.

Antler Nation Knowledge:

Wisconsin is home of the World Record typical whitetail, depending on what scoring system you choose to believe. The Johhny King buck, killed in 2006, has caused all manner of controversy over how typical points should be calculated. Some argue the King Buck is getting a raw deal from Boone & Crockett and, if scored properly, would topple Milo Hanson's long-standing record.
