5 Great Small Caliber Deer Hunting Rifles for 2017

By

Have You Hunted with One of These Rifles Yet?

It seems these days that everyone is all about the big guns. Everybody wants to pack a cannon to the deer woods. However, it isn’t necessary. And most smaller calibers (where legal) are plenty capable of getting the job done on deer-sized game.

Here we’ve compiled five very accurate small-caliber rifles that pack more than enough punch to bring down a whitetail. One of these is all you need to get the job done. No bazooka necessary.

In all seriousness, these are great for children, small-framed shooters, and even your biggest, toughest of deer hunters. There’s no shame in packing a lighter caliber. I've killed numerous deer with a .243. My wife even killed her first buck with one last fall. You can see what her well-placed shot with that caliber did to that deer here.

While these five rifles are sold with predator hunting packages in mind, they’re still great for deer hunting, too. The best part? You can purchase these for deer hunting and don’t need to buy another rifle for predators. That’s practical if you ask me.

Editor's Note: Always remember to check regulations to see what calibers are legal in your state for deer hunting. Laws vary from state to state. Not all states allow smaller calibers for deer hunting. Some states don't even allow larger calibers (or any rifles at all) for deer hunting, either.

This is another great model offered by TC. This is one of the best single-shot rifles on the market. It’s a little pricier than the Venture Predator, but it also offers a few more features, too. It sports a fluted barrel that also features a match-grade crown. It has the break-open action and an ambidextrous swing hammer. Not only that but it’s also easy to change out barrels, too. Hard to beat this gun for the price tag.

The Savage Predator Hunter is a solid bolt-action firearm. They just don’t come built any more solid than this gun. It comes with either a 22- or 24-inch barrel length. It weighs approximately 8.5 pounds. The Predator Hunter has a four-round capacity with a detachable magazine. And last but not least, it comes with the famous AccuStock. Plus, it comes equipped with the AccuTrigger, too — my favorite rifle trigger on the market.

Like the R-15 VTR Predator Rifle, but want a little more ruggedness? Go with the R15 VTR SS Varmint instead. It’s much like the previous model, only it offers a few more features. It’s optimized for form and functionality. This model comes with a little longer barrel at 24 inches. It has the free-floated button-rifled .68-inch muzzle OD SS barrel with a recessed hunting crown. It too sports the fluted barrel which helps with cooling. Also, it sports the Picatinny rail along the receiver for easy scope mounting. And it comes with the clean-break, single-stage hunting trigger as well.
