The recent cold front that swept through the Midwest kicked off pre-rut activity according to sources across the region. Mike Stroff of Savage Outdoors TV and Western Ranch Outfitters checked in from South Dakota with reports of increased daytime action and significant rubbing activity. Alex Gyllstrom also checked in from west-central Illinois with reports of increased daylight activity, especially from bucks 3 years old and younger. Gyllstrom also reports that small rubs and field-edge scrapes have begun to appear in his area while the presence of larger rubs and primary scrapes are yet to be seen. Other reports indicate a strong shift to green food sources such as clover, alfalfa, and winter wheat over the past week, with acorns continuing to be the main draw in the select areas where they can still be found.
