Monster Bucks: Waddell Grunts in a Giant Iowa Typical

This week on Monster Bucks, Michael Waddell heads to Iowa to hunt big Midwestern whitetails, and it doesn’t take long before a giant one steps into view. Waddell throws a few grunts at him and watches the deer walk into the food plot. He draws back the Hoyt and lets an arrow fly.

“First night in Iowa and we’ve shot a giant,” Waddell said. “First night. We just smoked that joker. That is a big buck. One of my best bucks ever. The only thing he’s weak on is he doesn’t have big brows. Looks like they broke off or didn’t grow. But I can tell you right now that is a big buck. Big mature deer and he is dead right here.”

Tactical Talk: Waddell says he almost passed on this buck, but at the last minute, he decided to shoot. Field judging bucks on in the heat of the moment isn’t easy. And sometimes, it’s easy to mess up. But Waddell made the right call on this deer and took the shot.

“I feel like a rookie for even thinking, for even somewhat thinking, about maybe letting this deer walk by," Waddell said. "Unbelieveable. Completely off my game when it comes to [judging]. I don’t even know what to say. I thought this was a 160, and a 160 is a giant. But I have just shot the biggest deer of my life and it doesn’t even have brow tines.”
