It was through a near death experience of the original owner, Martin Askes, in New Zealand, from which the incredible story of Stoney Creek began.
After getting lost for two days during a mid-winter hunting expedition, in the Central North Island, Martin and his good friend Connor McKenzie almost perished.
Battling the winter elements with no fire or food and wearing useless oilskin coats, heavy woollen jersey's and freezing cotton trousers the two hunters believed that if they didn’t get resources for the night they wouldn’t see it through to the morning.
It was at that moment of realisation that Stoney Creek was born. Martin promised himself that if he were to survive he would find some decent hunting clothing to keep him warm and dry which if the situation would repeat itself, he would be prepared.
Martin found himself venturing up stream, wading across one last time to find dry wood. Unbeknown to Martin, that stream was named Stoney Creek. It was here where he found a standing single dead tree, which would provide enough kindle to start and maintain a fire throughout the night.
After returning to civilisation and after months of unsuccessful attempts of searching for quality hunting clothing, Martin had has his first container of Polartec Windbloc fleece on the water. It was one of the most expensive fabrics in the world and Martin had to sell his house to pay for it.
Stoney Creek’s current owners Brent & Juanita McConnell continue today to make exclusive fabrics and introduce new designs to the Stoney Creek range.
