Join Realtree Pro Ian Harford as we follow his extraordinary journey, hunting Gold Medal Ibex in Spain.
When hunting In Spain, the terrain offers difficult challenges from the stunning mountains to the energy-sapping heat. The hunt started early in the morning as Ian began his first stalk of the day. The scenery is outstanding, but also incredibly challenging. The vast open wilderness is covered with endless gravel, rocks, and thorns which makes it even more difficult to spot the illusive Ibex.
Spain has a strong population of mature ibex, which are ideal for harvesting. Ian has been successful here in the past, although he is familiar with hunting this species, you always have to be prepared for the unexpected. On this epic hunting trip, Ian is trying his luck for something a little older and a little wiser.
After glassing an area known to have strong ibex numbers, unfortunately, there were not any suitable animals to be seen. This can be disappointing, but it is what hunting is all about, if you want to be successful you have to be patient.
It was time to head in for lunch and prepare for the afternoon hunting session. With lunch finished and energy stores replenished, Ian is ready for another afternoon of hunting.
The next location is just a short 40-minute drive where Fran doesn’t hunt very often but is known to be home to some big animals. As they scan the area from atop of a bluff, Jose spots a monster mature ibex in the distance. The stalk into this beautiful animal won't be easy, after climbing some tough rocks and crawling through some thick thorn bushes, Ian’s ibex is only 85 yards away.
Being able to get so close to the animal without being detected was an incredible display of stalking skill. However, the ibex was lying down, not offering an ethical shot. It was now a waiting game for the Ibex to stand up and present itself for a safe, clean shot. Ian patiently observes after preparing his rifle into a perfect shooting position.
Once on its feet and facing in the ideal direction, Ian fires a shot and the ibex falls immediately.
