Here’s a first look at 2018’s hottest new duck and goose gear

The desert air had a decidedly un-waterfowl feeling as I stepped out of a cab just off South Las Vegas Boulevard, ready to tackle the annual Shooting, Hunting and Outdoor Trade Show.

And then two mallards zipped over, headed for an inviting fountain near The Palazzo. An omen? Perhaps. As I soon discovered, the 2018 SHOT Show held many new treasures for duck and goose hunters. Here’s a quick roundup of some of the hottest ammo and Realtree Max-5-branded guns manufacturers unveiled during the event.

Editor’s note: Coming Thursday: New Realtree Max-5 apparel and other great Realtree camo gear from SHOT 2018.

This high-performance shotgun is now available in left-handed models and Max-5 (for guns with 28-inch barrels). And the gun isn’t just an adaptation of the original SBEIII. It’s a left-hand-specific mirror image of the original, delivering the same great performance and ergonomics.

The SBEIII features Benelli’s famous inertia-driven action and its Easy Locking System, an enhanced breech-closing system that prevents the gun from coming out of battery. Further, it has ergonomic advancements — including an oversized safety, bolt handle and bolt release — that make it easier to operate with gloved hands in cold weather. Benelli’s ComforTech stock and Combtech cheek pad combine to reduce felt recoil from even the heaviest duck and goose loads.

Kent’s new line of bismuth waterfowl shells uses a proprietary burnishing and rolling process that produces consistently uniform shot for superior patterning, penetration and retained energy. At 9.6 grams per cubic centimeter, bismuth is 24 percent denser than steel but as soft as lead, making it safe for older and fixed-choke guns. You might think this is a turkey-specific product, but as its packaging indicates, it’s also a waterfowl shotshell. This new load pairs Winchester’s ShotLok technology with bismuth shot, resulting in great performance for waterfowl hunting and other applications in areas that require lead-free shot. Bismuth offers superior penetration to lead loads, and the ShotLok technology protects the shot from fracturing, improving pattern density and down-range energy. It’s available in 3-inch loads with 1-5/8 ounces of No. 5 shot, producing a muzzle velocity of about 1,200 fps.
