Neighbors say people sometimes feed the large reptiles

Authorities are searching for the body of a Slidell, Louisiana, man attacked by an alligator while in his shed during Hurricane Ida. Storm surge had flooded the area, filling the shed with several feet of water.

Capt. Lance Vitter with the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office told WWLTV.com that the 71-year-old man had gone to check on items in a shed below his house when his wife said she heard a commotion.

The woman told deputies she saw an alligator attack her husband. She pulled him away from the alligator and then ran to call for help.

Unable to get cell service, the woman had to take a boat for help. She discovered her husband missing upon her return.

Police are continuing to search for the man as the floodwaters recede.

Neighbors say large alligators are often spotted in the area and that some people feed them.

At the moment, investigators do not suspect foul play.
