A mother beat a mountain lion off her 5-year-old son, saving his life.

According to CBS News, the mountain lion attacked the boy in the front yard of the family’s Calabasas, California, home Thursday, Aug. 26. The child is now in the hospital in stable condition.

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) said the 65-pound mountain lion inflicted injuries to the child’s head, neck, and upper torso.

Capt. Patrick Foy with CDFW said the mother ran to her child’s aid when she heard him scream.

“She ran outside and immediately started striking and punching at the lion and managed to fend the lion off her son,” he told CBS Los Angeles. “This mom’s an absolute hero who saved her son’s life, there’s no question about it.”

Wildlife officials shot and killed the young mountain lion not far from the scene of the attack. Lab tests later confirmed it was the cat responsible for the child’s injuries.

Wildlife officials said shortly after they shot the lion, two others appeared — a full-grown one with a radio collar and a small one without one. The older mountain lion, identified as a female that gave birth to cubs in October 2020, was part of a study. Officials collared the young mountain lion and released both into a suitable area nearby.
