Matt Bete’s wife thought he was kidding about the encounter, until she watched the surveillance footage
A Greenfield, Massachusetts, man just wanted a peaceful nap by the pool, but a curious black bear gave him quite the shock instead.
A Ring home security camera caught the moment the bear walked into Matt Bete’s backyard. It appeared to drink from the pool before walking up to the slumbering man, sniffing his foot, and then nudging it with its paw. When Bete woke with a start, the bear ran off.
Dawn Bete shared the clip of her husband’s bear encounter on Facebook, writing, “Matt was a little startled yesterday while taking a rest by the pool.”
In a Facebook comment to the Boston Herald, Dawn said, “Matt texted me a picture of the bear running through the front yard and said the bear nudged his foot while he was sleeping by the pool. Of course, I thought he was kidding!”
She continued, “He wasn’t sure how he should react but knew he couldn’t get up that fast but at least he had another chair and table between them if needed.”
Dave Wattles, a Massachusetts black bear biologist, said there are between 4,500 and 5,500 black bears in Massachusetts.
“They’re inherently not aggressive towards people,” Wattles said, but it’s still important to be cautious and give a bear space.
“We’ve never had anyone seriously hurt by a bear in Massachusetts,” he said.
