The man fought off the 10-foot gator and pulled the woman to safety

A South Carolina man is being called a hero after he rescued a woman from the jaws of an alligator.

News 3 reports the 75-year-old woman was trimming plants near the edge of a pond in the Calawassie Island development when a 10-foot gator attacked her and pulled her into the water.

A man passing by in a golf cart saw the woman in distress, but thought she was drowning. He had no idea an alligator was involved until he got closer. He then jumped into the water, fought off the gator and pulled her to safety.

The woman is now recovering in a local hospital from several broken bones and lacerations to her leg. The alligator was euthanized.

In May a woman was attacked and killed by an alligator on Kiawah Island. That was the third confirmed fatal attack in South Carolina in the past four years.
